OUR HISTORY

The Greater Cincinnati Women’s Post 644 was founded in 1946, when women veterans returning from World War II did not feel accepted or understood by the men in traditional American Legion posts. We have a very rich history and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to our “grandmothers” who had the persistence and fortitude to start an all-women’s post that has served the needs of women veterans for over 60 years. We are grateful that a handful of these women are still sharing their wisdom with us today.

When Post 644 was chartered in 1946, the Department of Ohio had 10 women’s posts across the state, boasting more than 500 women members. Today, the Greater Cincinnati Women’s Post 644 is the only one left – and we have only been able to find two others in the entire country. Women’s posts are an endangered species, but Post 644 is one of the rare exceptions that has heeded the call for change and has risen from the brink of extinction.
